Out in Brum: October/November

As I was on holiday for half of October I decided to combine my monthly ‘out in’ post for October and November. Sooooo… even more to talk about! Now were did we go in the last two month:

Pitstop at Yorks: My housemate Annmarie was in the Birmingham Future Graduate Apprentice scheme last year and every month Birmingham Future organises a free drop-in event non-members can attend. She had told me about it before and I was quite interested to try it out. The one in October we went to was a breakfast session, from 7.30 until 9am but I saw on their website that they do them over lunchtime now, which might be more convenient for people. Breakfast is my all time favourite though and Yorks does that well! I went along with Annmarie and met a couple of nice people there, although it’s always a bit different when you go to a networking event with someone. I am curious to see how the format works over lunchtime so will definitely try to attend the January one.

5 Guys: the crème de la crème of fastfood, at least that is how we see it. We go every month and BOY do we look forward to that! Delish burgers, toppings galore, more soft drink flavours than your mind can handle, do I need to say more?!

Wetherspoons Paradise Forum: Cheap, convenient location and you know exactly what your money is worth in Spoons, so we found ourselves sipping beers or eating chips in there quite a few times in the past two months. Especially with the German market in town the place is more crowded than ever.

The Wellington: When I walked into the Wellington I thought for a second that I was the only girl in there. It did take a good 5 seconds to actually spot two other women in there. But if you look at the selection of beers and ales the place has, you understand the pub’s attraction to the male population of Birmingham and beyond. Not that fond of ales, I rate pubs by the selection of beers they have and I am always on the lookout for a good old Belgian one. I probably paid twice or three times the price I would pay for a Tripel Karmeliet at home, but hey, you do not see one often over here.

The Lost and Found: At work we have ‘casual Friday’ every Friday, so I always feel very underdressed if we venture out to the L&F on a Friday night. On every other evening I love blending right in, sipping my fancy cocktail, enjoying the buzz, the nice interior and the people-watching. They no longer have my favourite cocktail (part of their summer selection methinks) so I will have to find myself a new favourite for the winter time.

On a nice, autumny Saturday I wandered around the city centre, did some shopping and had a bit of me-time at 6/8 Kafé with a chai latte and vegan chocolate-raspberry cake on the side. I then found out by accident that the Birmingham Christmas Lights Switch On was taking place that very day. Now, you have to imagine coming back from 30°C and palm trees in Indonesia to 4°C in Birmingham and Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas lights being switched on all in the scope of one week! A bit too much if you ask me…

As I work close to Brindley Place we often end up there for a nice lunch with some colleagues. And with my Brindley Place Card I get a discount in most places, which gives us an even bigger reason to go. In the last couple of weeks we tried out lunch at Cafe Rouge (2-4-1 deal, we had baguette poulet and demi poulet), Pizza Express (the Brindley Place Card gives you 10% off, but if you subscribe to Pizza Express you often get offers for -20% in your inbox) and Pitcher & Piano (10% off food & drink – I had the chicken, bacon, brie and potato salad).

When I came back from my holidays there was another thing I had to face: the dark. It gets dark at 4pm, so I cannot go running along the canal anymore after work. In an attempt to stay in some sort of shape this winter I joined our gym around the corner: Pure Gym. It can get quite crowded but it is pretty cheap (18£/month) and without contract, which is good for me as God knows when Spring will actually kick in here.

On a Friday night we like to go for after work drinks with the colleagues, as you might get from my blog posts. A couple of weeks back my colleague Sara organised an outing to the Victoria, which is one of the cosier pubs I have been to in Birmingham. After a couple of drinks there we went down to Digbeth for some burgers from the Original Patty Men at Digbeth Dining Club. Cannot believe it was only the second time I made it to DDC, what a great concept, the street food revolution that takes place every Friday in good ol’ Brum. To warm up afterwards we went to the Old Crown for some drinks – rumour has it this place is the oldest pub in all of Birmingham.

Some birthday festivities as well in November: we had a nice birthday lunch for a colleague at Alfie Birds at the Custard Factory – their burgers and pizza have been approved! Later on we went to the Old Joint Stock for a Blues Opera! It was called ‘Songs from a Ledge‘ and I had never seen anything like it but it was really fab! Should definitely do more live gigs, I tend to forget how much I enjoy them!

We organised two conferences with work at the Conference Aston Event Space and I have to say that I was really impressed with the venue: the service from the personnel, the event spaces, the rooms, everything of great quality!

Last but not least, as you cannot ignore it these days: the Christmas Market is overly present in Birmingham. We have been twice with the colleagues, which was really nice, but I feel I have seen it now. Unfortunately, the City of Birmingham does not agree with me and the market will be around a while longer, so I will have to stick with my alternative routes to Birmingham New Street for now.

Out in Brum: August

I cannot believe it is already September – time flies! The first week of September has already passed by, so it is about time that I tell you where we have been hanging out last month.

  • The Malt House: I cannot reiterate it enough: around the corner from work, so we end up there quite often! Though not always in regular attire…

  • Cannon Hill Park: After my first visit (and pick nick!) I met up with some friends there on a nice Sunday and I can tell you: it is absolutely wonderful. Families, groups of friends, just your lovely chill afternoon out.
  • Five Guys: Bring on the burgers! They probably have never seen any such enthusiastic group of girls at Five Guys! We devoured the burgers/hot dogs, marveled at the soft drink options and agreed on the fact that we could all pretty much roll all the way back to New Street Station. We have now established Five Guys Day, it’s a thing!

  • Karczma: If you know me, you know I go weak in the knees for some good Polish food. And good Polish food we had in August! My lovely Polish colleagues took me to Karczma, the Polish restaurant. We already knew exactly what we wanted to eat probably two weeks in advance: potato pancakes with goulash! I could not move afterwards, so full, but so worth it!
  • Coast to Coast: Birthdays ask for birthday dinners, so the housemates and I made a trip to Coast to Coast for a nice dinner straight from ‘Murica. I opted for the Chicago deep dish pizza, reminiscing the mouthwatering pizza I had just over a year ago at Giordano’s in Naperville, but got disappointed unfortunately. The housemates did get some very nice looking burgers and wraps. All in all a  nice celebratory evening!

  • The Bureau: Birthday celebrations for the win! For the Joint Birthday Bash of Vicky and myself we started off the night at The Bureau with some very nice cocktails! We introduced a little theme to spice things up: hats and moustaches all around!

  • The party continued at Island Bar! Good drinks, weird DJs, wonderful company – what more can you ask for?
  • I also went to see my first football match in the UK: Aston Villa – Hull! We did the whole razzmatazz: cider, fan shop, pie, more cider and mostly cheering along with the die-hard AVFC supporters when they scored their two goals and won! Great Sunday!

Out in Brum: July – Uit in Birmingham: Juli

Every month I give an overview of where my curiosity (or my friends/colleagues) took me in my new hometown. Birmingham has loads of potential, as we keep on saying,  it just needs to be brought out! July was crazy busy, apologies for my absence online or delay in replying to messages, but when on my computer all day at work I try to spend my free hours enjoying English summer as much as I can.

There are so many things to talk about this month that I put them in a couple of categories for you:

Lunch: As our work is situated very close to Brindley Place, we often find ourselves heading in that direction for a nice lunch. One I forgot to mention last month is Carluccio’s, where we had a lovely Italian lunch (I had the Penne Gardiniera which I would highly recommend!).  On a spontaneous Tuesday morning we were tempted by the idea of having burrito’s for lunch and honestly, no one really needed to be convinced. Off to Chilacas we went where we enjoyed their burrito’s and “buy 1, get one burrito extra for 1£”! The last week of July brought two more lunch dates: we went to Wagamama to celebrate a colleague’s 2 year work anniversary (Pad Thai for the win!) and tried out another burger place (I love doing comparative research when it comes to burgers): Gourmet Burger Kitchen. We had been to Handmade Burgers Co before, but I have to say I prefer Gourmet (also because of their 6£ lunch deal).

Breakfast and coffee: If you know me well you know I love my breakfast. I had been to Yorks before for tea with the housemates as well as their Monday jazz evenings (with pizza!). At the beginning of July I went there for a Tedx Brum Social which was very inspiring. When my sister visited I took her there for breakfast: pancakes with caramelised banana for her, french pastries for me. The next day my sister and I went for lunch at the Boston Tea Party. Finally I found a place where they do good, non-sweetened homemade lemonade! I took my German friend there who was visiting the weekend after for some delish pancakes. Last week I got to try out a new coffee place: Urban Coffee. Did not have coffee though, as it was after work and I have enough sleeping problems as it is, but the venue is really nice, numerous coffee options, even some espresso martini’s if you fancy it!

Volunteering day: With work we had a volunteering day at the Acker’s Centre, where we worked very hard doing maintenance on different parts of the site. To end such a long but satisfying day well, we went for drinks at Bodega – cocktails! The night continued at Pizza Express (long live the vouchers!) and ended with more cocktails in Island Bar.

Rooftop Bar Crawl: Not your average Wednesday evening,  but definitely one worth mentioning. The weather was wonderful and we were set out to discover some cool rooftops in Brum! First one on the list: The Bureau. Good cocktails and a nice rooftop, although not as big as we expected it to be. Next stop: Vertu! Absolutely fell in love with this place while we were sipping our Pimms and enjoying the sun and the hipster vibe. Time for some food then, so we went to Pasta Di Piazza, also in the Jewellery Quarter. Loved my Risotto Marinara! And to end the night we ventured to the Church Inn for more rooftop love.

When in Brum: I had some more visitors in July, so obviously wanted to show them the best of Brum, as well as discovering some new things. When my sister was here we went to try out Digbeth Dining Club. Great street food event, interesting venue. After that we had some more drinks (and enjoyed the people watching) at The Old Crown. This Belgian needs her daily dose of chocolate, so when the sister came we had to make a trip to Cadbury World! Chocolate galore! The other weekend I had my German friend visiting and took her, after a long day of seeing the sights in Liverpool to the Old Joint Stock for dinner. The day after we visited the Botanical gardens and managed to even see part of a jazz concert there!

Birthday drinks: Two birthday drinks, one evening: first some drinks at the Malt House for a colleague’s birthday, then to The Lost and Found for some very nice cocktails (5£ during happy hour!)

Miscellaneous: I went to the Birmingham edition of Wireless! My colleague Vicky and I went on the Sunday and really liked Iggy Azalea, Tinie Tempah, Pharrell and Kanye! Same colleague, different venue: the Edwardian Tea Rooms. We went to the official opening and I can assure you: their gin and rose lemonade drinks were superb!

Out in Brum: May – Uit in Birmingham: Mei

Time for another “Out in Brum” update! Same as last time: an overview of the places we have been to in Brum this month! If you see anything you like or if you think of a place I must definitely check out, let me know!

Wagamama: we went to the Brindley Place branch with the colleagues for lunch. Good location, quick service, only a bit of a hassle to all pay separately but I did not really mind as I had a delicious Pad Thai!

Yorks Bakery Café: is well on its way to become my favourite place in Brum! We had been there before with the housemates, but now we went for their Jazz Nights on Mondays: a live jazz band from 19.00 onwards, serving pizza’s and craft beers but (due to arriving late and not having the best seats) our main focus of the evening was this:

Monopoly, the Birmingham edition!

Monopoly, the Birmingham edition!

Poppy Red: Julie, her housemate Sara and I met up at Arcadian for drinks on a weekday evening. We sat outside because there was a heating lamp and also because there was no one else inside, other than the couple who were getting VERY intimate in a corner. Nothing special, guess I should go there on an evening during the weekend to actually see what it is like, but no special desire to do that for now.

Six Eight Kafe: I spotted this independent coffee shop on the day of my interview already, but only managed to visit it last weekend. It was worth the wait and exactly how I expected it to be: hipsteresque, good coffee, chill vibe. We had some nice cakes to go along with our coffees, even a gluten-free one for my friend Marie! Free wifi and little blackboards that explain coffee basics  – can’t wait to go back!

Al Frash balti: I had my first visitors over last weekend, so that called for some food explorations! We set off for the Balti Triangle and found this place. We had to wait a bit for our food, but that is understandable I guess on a Saturday night. The food was good, ranging from spicy to very spicy (in my case). Only paying was a bit of a pain due to some trouble the people before us were having.

Yardbird: Another month, another visit to the Yardbird. Same chill atmosphere, funny people with great dancing skills and Belgian beers. Bingo!

The Malt House: The Friday-after-work-drinks tradition with the colleagues continues and we went to the Malt House twice this month, as it is around the corner from work. Drinks are not too expensive and we usually manage to get a table for our group, so it is a winner!

After work drinks!

After work drinks!

Brasshouse: 2-4-1 cocktails, need we say more? Last Friday Raquel organised her goodbye drinks here and it was a lot of fun, despite having to see her go.

Out in Brum: April – Uit in Birmingham: April

Moving to a new city means a whole lot of places to discover. Every month I will try to give you an overview of where we went and what we liked in our dearest Brum.

Dads Lane Fish & Chip Bar: First night in Brum and Julie asked me what I wanted to eat. Only one answer possible: “Fish & chips!”. Luckily, there is a fish and chips shop around the corner from where she lives in Selly Park. And it was a good one! On the one side you have the shop, on the other the restaurant. Funky mix, but the food was grand.

Pitcher & Piano: I went here for lunch with Raquel on my second day in Brum. I very much like their interior (fireplaces!) and they do 6£ lunch which is not bad. I have to admit that it is my size of lunch, if you are a guy or you have a big appetite, I would suggest you go for a double lunch 🙂 We went there a second time for a meetup, more precisely the 20’s and new to Birmingham one, where Keith gained eternal fame by only finding out we were at a meetup after an hour of awkward socializing with everyone around us. They have 2-for-1 after work drink specials!

Strada: Day three in Birmingham – still no house nor a kitchen, so out for dinner again it is! Raquel and I went to Strada as I was craving pasta. I had ravioli with ricotta cheese & spinach which cost around 10£. Good food, small portion though.

Woktastic: Lunch time! As we had a training in the afternoon we decided with some colleagues to try out a place close to work during lunch time. And like it we did: a 6£ bento lunch box, in my case with salmon. Quick service, friendly waiters.

Yardbird Jazz Club: When you go out in England, one must remember two things: everyone dresses up big time and nobody wears a coat. And then you have Yardbird, where I feel completely at ease in my jeans and T-shirt. They do jazz gigs as well rock/pop/reggae and have Belgian beers on tap. Need I say more? 🙂

Yorks Bakery Cafe: is one of those places where I would go sip my coffee or tea all day every day. They have great coffees and teas, it is a hipster hub, there are board games and jazz evenings on Mondays. My personal favourite (for now) is their Jasmine Dragon Pearls green tea.

Old Joint Stock: We launched an after-work-drinks-tradition with my new colleagues and this is the first place we went to.  A theatre and pub, all in all a very pretty location, as you can see on the picture. Although a bit crowdy on a Friday night (like most other bars) we did manage to get a table to sit at with about 8 people. Fun times!

The Old Joint Stock Theatre and Pub

The Old Joint Stock Theatre and Pub

All Bar One: After-work-drinks-with-the-colleagues, 2nd edition. Closer to work, a bit more posh: fancier interior, more dressed-up people (in contrast to casual-Friday-me) and more expensive drinks.

Handmade Burger Co: Lunch meeting with our team and this place was proposed by almost a third of the team. Not too crowded during lunch, quick service and I made the mistake of thinking that the burger alone would not suffice and that I needed chips with it. Lesson learned: split chips with someone else next time. What I do not like is that you have to order (and pay) everything separately, which give you the false idea of a not-too-expensive burger but add some sauce and chips and a drink to it and there you go.

The Lord Clifden: “This is where we will hang out in summer!” is what we thought when we discovered the Lord Cliften’s beergarden. Massive space, barbeque, table football tables – yeah baby!

The Lord Cliften's beergarden - approved!

The Lord Cliften’s beergarden – approved!

Après: One of the slightly weirder bars we ended up in. The interior was erotic red almost, but then with massive TV screens showing different sports games. They did have Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime cider, so I was happy.

Popworld: We live a stone’s throw from Broad Street, so it is surprising we only ended up there once last month. That one time however was Corentin’s birthday and so we wanted to party hard. In the end the girls got their choice and we went to Popworld – the culmination of 90’s shamelessness. And we danced.
